In the past week, the women's football world has embarked on the schedule of international match days. In addition to the UEFA Women's Nations League in the Europe and the Concacaf Women's Gold Cup in the Americas. Our Lioness team have also started their international friendly matches. Today, let's take a look at the results and highlights of the England women’s international friendly matches together.
Lionesses' International Friendly
1. England vs Austria
Last Friday, the England national team faced their opponent Austria in the coastal city of Algeciras in southern Spain. The Lionesses performed exceptionally well in this match, with players from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Aston Villa contributing seven goals. Ultimately, the England team secured a convincing victory with a scoreline of 7-2 against their first friendly match opponent. Let's take a look at some highlights from this game.
Two minutes into the game, England took the lead with a goal orchestrated and finished by Russo. After receiving the ball, she showcased Messi-like dribbling skills, turning and maneuvering past defenders. She then passed the ball to Mead on the right. Though Mead's shot was blocked by her arsenal teammate Manuela Zinsberger, Russo quickly sprinted and poked the ball into the net.
In our previous WSL highlights, we mentioned that Grace Clinton, the 20-year-old talent from Tottenham Hotspur, would be one of England's brightest stars in the coming years. In the 17 minute of this match, during her debut for the senior team, she first struck the post with a left-footed shot. One minute later, she received a superb cross from Hemp on the left flank and headed it into the net.
The trailing Austrian women's team didn't give up. They later pulled one back with a header by Kirchberger.
The third goal again came from the efforts of the front trio. While Russo couldn't convert Hemp's pass, Mead unleashed a rocket shot after receiving the ball.
After establishing the lead in the first half, England made substitutions in the second half, bringing on Lotte Wubben-Moy and Lauren James. Shortly after, the Lionesses scored their fourth goal. Russo smoothly netted a brace after receiving Stanway's pressuring.
After Jess Park's splendid heel goal, Austria responded with Kirchberger scoring another header.
In the final stages of the game, Lauren James' shot hit the post and rebounded to Mead, who easily slotted it in. In added time, Daly smartly beat the offside trap and scored a powerful goal.
2. England vs Italy
This is yet another brilliant victory for the England team. Like the previous match, they took the lead from the very beginning. The efforts of the Italian girls did not cause too much trouble for the Lionesses during the game. They ended February's international match days with two fantastic wins.
3. Conclusions
After successfully completing this matchday, the England footballers will continue their journey in the WSL and FA Cup in March. We hope that the athletes participating in this week's UEFA Women's Nations League finals and the Concacaf Women's Gold Cup will return to their teams in good health and continue to deliver outstanding performances.
